Arthur William Dames was born in 1891 the son of John a general labourer and Elizabeth Dames (née Jones).
His parents were born at Nottingham and married in 1877. They had nine children - Annie b.1877, Clara b.1879, Ernest b.1880, Gertrude b.1883, Robert b.1884, Catherine b.1888, Arthur William b.1891, Edward b.1892 and Thomas b.1896.
In 1911, they lived at 27 Ossington Street, Independent Street, Radford Nottingham. John 68 yrs a general labourer is living with his wife Elizabeth 65 yrs and their children Robert 27 yrs worked as a painter, his wife Clara 32 yrs was a cotton winder, William 21 yrs a lace doubler, Edward 19 yrs a bricklayer’s labourer. Thomas 15yrs a lace doubler,
Arthur William married Ethel Maud Serle (born 23rd August 1891) on 113t June 1914 at St Michaels Church, Radford, and they had two sons William Thomas born 29th March 1915 and Joseph Thomas born 5th February 1917, they lived at 50 Independent Street Radford Nottingham.
Commencing 18t November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Gunner Arthur William Dames enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 38th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery he was killed in action on 15th May 1918 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery Grave Reference IX.B.86.
His brother Private Robert Dames enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action on 10th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
