Family history

William Wood (junior) was born in 1883 at Barnsley, Yorkshire, he was the son of the late William Wood (senior) a colliery stoker and Alice Wood née Sheldon of 60 Cope Street, Barnsley.

His father William Wood (senior) was born in 1852 at Macclesfield he died in 1917 aged 65 yrs, his mother Alice Sheldon was born in 1854 at Dudley, they were married on 25th January 1878 at All Saints church, Silkstone, Yorkshire, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 60 Cope Street, Barnsley, William 59 yrs is a colliery stoker, he is living with his wife Alice 55 yrs and their children, Emma 30 yrs a general servant, Harry 22 yrs a foundry labourer, Stanley 19 yrs a coal carter and Alice 16 yrs a tailoress.

William Wood (junior) married Theresa Borne (born 14th April 1881 Bethanl Green London) on 7th June 1908 at St Saviours Church, Walthamstowe. they lived at 16, Rushton Terrace, Northville Street, St Ann's Nottingham they had 4 children, James born 31st March 1909, Dorothy born 30th November 1910, Theresa born 19th March 1913 and Kathleen born 1913 and died 1914.

In the 1911 census William and his family are living at 50 Cope Street, Barnsley, William 28 yrs is a glass furnace man, he is living with his wife Theresa 29 yrs and their children, James 2 yrs and Dorothy 4 months of age.

Military history

Private William Wood enlisted on 2nd September 1914 at Barnsley giving his age as 32 yrs, his address as 62 Cope Street, Barnsley, he served with the 1/5th battalion Yorks and Lancaster Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 13th April 1915. He was wounded on 10th July 1915 a shell wound to his back he was admitted to the 10th casualty clearing station, he died at 8.15 pm on 15th July 1915 he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
