Family history

Harry was the younger son of Frank and Annie Mary Sturdy (née Clipstone).

He was born on 28 August 1899 in Nottingham and baptised on 30 October 1899 at St Ann's, Nottingham. His brother Frank had been born in 1897, also in Nottingham.

In 1901 he and Frank were living with their parents at 1 Central Street, St Ann's.

At the time of the 1911 census the family was living at 26 Plantagenet Street, St Ann's. Frank Sturdy (39), a fruit salesman, Annie Mary (36), Frank (14), a telegraph messenger, and Harry (11) who was at school. Also in the household was a boarder, Edward Amos Marrin (25).

In 1915 when Frank enlisted the family home was at 13 Frederick Terrace, Nottingham, and this was given as their parent's address on Harry's CWGC record.

Military history

Private Harry Sturdy served with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own).

He died of pneumonia at Clipstone Military Hospital, Nottinghamshire, on 23 November 1919 and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref 19816 C).

His brother Private Frank Sturdy, 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters, was killed on 28 June 1916 age 20 and buried in Bienvillers Military Cemetery. (See record on this Roll of Honour)
