Family history

Cecil Edgar Sheppard was born in 1886 at Tralee, Kerry Ireland, he was the son of William and an army pensioner Susan Alma Sheppard and the brother of William, Violet, Bertie, Lilian May, Clarence and Gertrude Sheppard of 90 Beverley Street, Nottingham.

His father William was born 1853 at Nottingham, his mother Susan Alma was born in 1857 at Harold, Cambrigeshire, they were married C1883 and went on to have 7 children,

In 1911 the family lived at 90 Beverley Street St Ann's Nottingham. William 56 yrs is an army pensioner, he is living with his wife Susan 54 yrs and their children, Violet 23 yrs a pattern girl, Bertie 20 yrs a window cleaner, Lillian May 19 yrs a lace jennier, Clarence Edward 17 yrs a machine minder,and Gertrude 14 yrs a pattern girl.

He was the husband of Annie Cooper (born 25th October 1883) whom he married in 1914 at Nottingham, she brought 2 children to the marriage Leslie Arthur born 12th April 1908 and Emma born 11th June 1910.they lived at 12 Roberts Street Sneinton Road Nottingham.

Commecing 23rd April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 24 shillings and 2 pence a week, at this date his widow was living at 18 Kimberley Street, Colwick Road, Nottingham.

Military history

Corporal Cecil Edgar Sheppard enlisted at Richmond, Yorkshire he served with the 6th battalion Yorkshire Rgiment, he was killed in action on 27th September 1916 and is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt

Obituary from the Nottingham Evening Post dated 27th September 1917 : -

“SHEPPARD. – In loving memory of Corporal C. E. Sheppard, killed in action September 27th, 1916, beloved son of William and Alma Sheppard, of 90, Beverley-street. He marched away so bravely,his young head proudly held; his footsteps never faltered, his courage never failed; there on the field of battle he calmly took his place, he fought and died for England, and the honour of his race. – Sorrowing father, mother, sisters, and brothers (two with the colours, Ted in France).

“SHEPPARD. – Killed in action September 27th, 1916, Corporal C. E. Sheppard. He went at first to do his best, God grant him now eternal rest. – From his sorrowing sister and brother, Violet and Ted (in France).”
