Family history

John Derry was born in 1891 at Widness, he was the son of the late William Derry a railway goods guard and Mary Ellen Derry née Heath and the brother of Ruth, Kate, Charles and Amy Winifred Derry.

His father William was born in 1860 at Sneinton, he died in 1905 aged 45 yrs, his mother Mary Ellen Heath was born in 1862 at Nottingham, they were married on 27th August 1889 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they had 5 children.

In 1911 they lived at 34 Sutton Street Nottingham. hsi widowed mother Mary Ellen 49 yrs is living with her children, John 20 years a wood sawyer, Ruth 19 yrs a lace jennier, Kate 17 yrs a printer clerk, Charles 16 yrs and Amy Winifred 13 yrs of age.

John married Ida Marie Keetley (born 27th November 1892 ) they were married in 1915 in Nottingham, they lived at 12 Leicester Street Nottingham. they had a son William Frank Derry born 3rd April 1915.

Commencing 17th March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military history

Private John Derry enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 23271 in the North Staffordshire Regiment, he was serving with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 23rd August 1918, he is buried at Gomiecourt South Cemetery

Extra information

Brother Charles served in Mesopotamia with the Royal Army Medical Corps, he was discharged from the Army on 8th May 1919.
