Arthur Frederick Claude Sharp was born in 1896 at Barrow upon Soar, he was the son of Arthur Frederick a tobacconist and newsagent and Hannah Sharpe née Birch of 360 St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham.
His father was born in 1870 at Syston, Leicestershire, his mother Hannah Birchwas born in 1868 at Leicester, they were married in 1889 at Barrow Upon Soar, they went on to have 6 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 360 St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham, Arthur Frederick 41 yrs is a tobacconist and newsagent he is living with his wife Hannah 43 yrs and their children, John Baker Douglas 16 yrs a telephone worker, Arthur Frederick Claude 15 yrs no occupation listed, Robert Kimberley 11 years scholar, Rueben 9 yrs.
Corporal Arthur Frederick Claude Sharpe attested for 6 yrs service in the Army Special Reserve at Nottingham on 28th July 1913, and joined the 3rd battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was 18 yrs and 1 month of age, he gave his occupation as that of fitter and turner.
He was mobilised on the outbreak of war , and promoted to Lance Corporal on 8th September 1914. He landed in France on 11th December 1914, promoted to corporal on 12th December 1914. He was killed in action on 11th February 1915 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery Richebourg-L'Avoque Grave Reference: I.G.5
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 6 March 1915: ‘Corporal AFC Sharp, 2nd Leicesters, attached to the Indian Forces, 360 St Ann’s Well Road, killed in action February 11th.’
