Family history

Augustus John Frederick Turner was born in 1886 at Nottingham, the son of the late John, a plumber’s labourer and Mary Jane Turner née Topham-Chamberlain of 7 John Square Keswick Street Sneinton Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1854 at Sneinton, he died in 1903 aged 50 yrs, his mother Mary Jane Topham Chamberlain was born in 1857 at Nottingham they were married on 25th May 1877 at Holy Trinity Church, Notttingham, they went on to have 11 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 3 Arrow Terrace, Fisher Gate, Nottingham, Mary Jane Turner 54 yrs is a widow sh was a lace finisher, she is living with her children, Charles Claude 23 yrs a raiway porter, Dorothy Annie 19 yrs a fancy filly hand and Henry 17 yrs a shop porter.He was the son of Mary Jane Turner and the brother of Dorothy Annie and Henry Hamilton Turner. In 1911 they lived at 3 Arrow Terrace Fisher Gate Nottingham.

Augustus was the husband of Eliza Cope (born 1888 ) they were married on 27th December 1909 at St Ann's Nottingham, and the father of Ethel Maud Turner born 22nd November 1910 and Ida Turner born 20th August 1912,

In the 1911 census they lived at 7 Ashover Terrace Manning Street and later at 37 Ball Street (both St Ann’s Nottingham).

His widow later re married on 5th July 1919, at Nottingham, to Frederick Bales a lithographic printer

Military history

Private Augustus John Frederick Turner enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 10c, 10D & 11A

Nottingham Evening Post 20/8/1918:

“TURNER. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. A. J. F. Turner, 37 Ball-street, who was killed in action August 20th, 1917. We known the Lord has called him to lay his armour by, that he may wear in glory a crown of victory. – From loving wife and children.

“TURNER. – In loving memory of Pte. A .J. F. Turner, killed in action August 20th, 1917. A day of remembrance so sad to recall. – Mother, Beatie, and Dolly.”.

Private Claude Charles Samuel Turner enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sout Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 30th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.

Private Henry Turner enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 24, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)

Having no known grave his name is commemorated: Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
