Family history

John William Rolfe was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur a school caretaker and Elizabeth Clara Rolfe née Toyne and the brother of Ruth, Mary Ann Lovely and Arthur James Rolfe. of 1 Alfred Terrace Abbotsford Street and later 36 Cathcart Street (both St Ann's Nottingham).

His father Arthur was born in 1849 at Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, his mother Elizabeth Clara Toyne was born in 1853 at Boston, they were married on 11th October 1875 at St Stephens Church, Nottingham, they had 9 children sadly three died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Alfred Terrace, Abbotsford Street, Nottingham, Arthur 62 yrs is a school caretaker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Clara 58 yrs and their children, Ruth 29 yrs a dress maker, Mary Ann 26 yrs a machinist, Arthur James 21 yrs who is out of work and John William 16 yrs a motor car cleaner.

Military history

Private John William Rolfe enlisted at Ilkeston he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial
