Thomas Richardson was born in 1886 at Nottingham the son of William a dyer and Ellen Richardson (née Brindley) of 11 Edwin Street, Nottingham.
William was born in 1853 at Derby and died in 1901 at Nottingham aged 49. Ellen Brindley was born in 1856 also at Derby. Married 21/9/1873 at St John’s Church, Derby, they had 14 children, 12 surviving infancy - Ellen b.1875, William b.1876, Jane b.1879, Alfred b.1880, Alice b.1882 (all born in Derby) and James b.1884, Thomas b.1886, Henry b.1888, Ernest b.1890, Reuben b.1893, Mary b.1896 and Florence b.1897 (all born in Nottingham).
In 1891 the family lived at 4 Burnaby Terrace St Mary's and in 1901 at 3 Lyndock Terrace St Phillip's (both Nottingham).
Private Thomas Richardson enlisted at Chilwell, Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 16th September 1916, He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial (Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A).
Medal Roll cites 11/9/1916 as date of death.
Four of Thomas Richardson’s brothers died in the Great War. Hundreds of Nottinghamshire families lost two sons, scores lost three and one four but, from this county, only William and Ellen Richardson had five sons killed:
Private Alfred Richardson, 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 12th March 1915. He is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France.
Private Ernest Richardson, 10th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died of wounds on 29th December 1917. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.
Private Henry Richardson, 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, died as a prisoner of war on 25th September 1917. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Private William Richardson, 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed in action on 17th October 1914. Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial.
His pension record card shows his mother Ellen Richardson of 11 Westminter Villas, Westminster Street, Nottingham as a claiment , it goes on to mention Mary Hyde 53 Red Lion Street, Nottingham as mother of his illegitimate child, and also Mrs G E Munton of 35 Pipe Street, Southwell Road, Nottingham as the guardian of his illegitimate child.
