Family history

William Harris was born in 1889 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alexander a house painter and Alice Harris née Callaghan and the brother of John, Alexander, Charlie, Edward, Emma and Alice Harris of 6 Havelock Street, Nottingham.

Alexander was born in 1863 at Nottingham, Alice Callaghan was born in 1866 at Darlaston, Staffordshire, they were married in 1885 at Nottingham, they had 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood.

He was the husband of Kate Cox whom he married in 1907 at Nottingham, they had children William Frederick, Alexander (died J/A/S/1911 aged 1) and Charles Harris they lived at 7 Ridgeway Terrace, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 4 Frederick Terrace, Nottingham, Alexander 49 yrs is a house painter living with his wife Alice 47 yrs and 5 children.

In the same 1911 census William is living at 4 Angrave Street, Nottingham, is 23 yrs and a house painter he is living with his wife Kate 23 yrs and their children, Frederick 1 year old and Alexander 7 months old.

Kate Harris was awarded a pension of 19/6d per week 29th November 1915.

His widow Kate married George Elliott in Nottingham O/N/D/1918 and they lived at 8 Bulwell Green Bulwell Nottingham..

Military history

Sereant William Harris enlisted as a Territorial 1st March 1909 and agreed to serve abroad 4th September 1914. On enlistment he stood 5'9" tall and weighed 143 lbs.

He served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, He served at home from 5th August 1914 until 27th February 1915 and then in France & Flanders until his death on 12th May 1915 and is buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star.
