Family history

John Barker was baptised on 26th December 1875 at St John, Leenside, Nottingham he was the son of John , a shoemaker, and Elizabeth Barker née Wheldon joof 14 High Cross Street Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1847 at Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Wheldon was born in 1845 also at Nottingham. Married in 1867 they had seven children - William b.1869, Adelaide b.1871, John b.1874, Elizabeth b.1878, Henry b.1881, Ernest b.1883 and Leonard b.1885.

John married Lucy Dilks (born 12th August 1874) in Nottingham in 1893 and they had five children - Grace Adelaide b.1894, Lucy b.1896, John William born 25th August 1901, Lizzie born 30th April 1904 and George Henry born 28th February 1911. In 1901 John and his family lived at 40 Moodey Street Carlton Road Nottingham.

By 1911 they lived at 43 Martin Street St Ann’s and at the time of Barker’s death lived at 7 Cherry Place Coalpit Lane (both Nottingham).

Commencing 19th June 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 23 shillings aweek.

Military history

John Barker enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he landed in Gallipoli on 7th November 1915. He was killed in the collapse of his dugout during a storm at Suvla on 26th November 1915. The storm that day caused the dug-out he and others were sheltering in to collapse and five men, including Barker, were killed. He is buried at Hill 10 Cemetery Suvla Gallipoli Grave Reference: I A 15
