Family history

Stephen Towle was born in 1884 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John Towle a bricklayer and Hannah Towle née Hunt, of Carlton, Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1843 at Nottingham, he died in 1918 aged 75 yrs, his mother Hannah Hunt was born in Nottingham in 1845 she died in 1908 aged, 63 yrs, they were married on 2nd November 1864 at North Wingfield, they went on to have 10 children.

Stephen Towle was the husband of Nellie Isabel Hawthorn they were married on 6th March 1909 at St Ann's, Notingham, they had two children, Nellie Isabel Towle born 20th September 1910 and Douglas Edgar Towle born 14th November 1912.

In the census the family lived at 3 Peel Villas, Quereby Road, Woodborough Road Nottingham Stephen 27 yrs a bricklayer, and Nellie Isabell 28 yrs and their daughter Nellie Isabel 4 months old.

Military history

Sapper Stephen Towle enlisted at Nottingham on 11th September 1915, giving his age as 31 yrs and 10 months, his address was 23 Pole Street, Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham.

He served with the Royal Engineers and served at home from 11 September 1915 until 10th January 1917. He served abroad from 11th January 1917 until 22nd October 1917 when he was returned to England, he served until his discharge on 9th September 1918 on medical grounds. He died on 31st August 1919 at the Nottingham City Isolation Hospital.
