Arthur Colton was born in 1871 at Carrington, he married Harriett Ward (born 1872 Sheffield) on 29th January 1889 at Wyvill with Hungerton, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, his surving children were Eliza Emma, Annie Mary, Thomas Arthur, Muriel Ethel, Albert Edward and George Henry Colton.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 7 New Street, Carrington, Nottingham. Arthur 40 yrs a cleaner with the GPO is living with his wife Harriett 39 yrs a lace mender and their children, Eliza Emma 19 yrs a lace mender, Anne Mary 15 yrs, Thomas Arthur 15 yrs, Hida Gladys 7 yrs, Muriel Ethel 6 yrs Albert Edward 3 yrs and George Henry 6 months old.
Private Arthur Colton enlisted on 27th April 1889 at Derby he served with the Sherwood Foresters Notts and Derbys Regiment, 45th and 95th foot.
He was discharged from the Army on 5th May 1902 having served for 13 yrs and 9 days, during his career he was promoted to lance coproral (1892) and Corporal (1893) then reduced to Private (1894)
Athur Colton died on 31 May 1919 and was given a military funeral at Basford Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post, 'Roll of Honour,' 3 June 1919: 'Coulton (sic) On May 31st at 7, New Street, Carrington, Arthur, the beloved husband of Harriett Coulton (sic), for 22 years employed at the GPO Nottingham.
