Richard Bowbanks was born in 1891 at Nottingham, he was the son of Richard Gursham a compositor and Emma Sarah Bowbanks née Hunt of 51 Brighton Street, Peas Hill Road, St Ann's Nottingham.

His father Richard Gursham was born in 1855 at Nottingham, his mother Emma SarahHent was born in 1856 also in Nottinghamthey were married in 1882 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 51 Brighton Street, Peas Hill Road, St Ann's, Nottingham, Richard 56 yrs is a compositor, he is living with his wife Emma 55 yrs and their children, Helen 18 yrs a machine hand, Richard 20 yrs an engineer, Priscilla 15 yrs an eraand girl and Lilian 15 yrs an errnad girl.
