Family history

John William Bromley was born on 24th May 1885 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 24th July 1885 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, he was the son of Charles William a baker and Charlotte Bromley née Briggs of Coalpit Lane, Nottingham.

His father Charles William was born in 1862 at Dewsbury Yorkshire, his mother Charlotte Briggs was born in 1863 at Shelford, Nottingham, they were married on 6th August 1882 at St Stephens Church at Sneinton, they had a further son Arthur Henry born 1888 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census his parents and sibling are living at 29 Coalpit Lane, Nottingham, Charles William 49 yrs is a baker, he is living with his wife Charlotte 48 yrs and their son Arthur Henry 23 yrs a baker.

John William married Florence Stevens (born 18th February 1885) on 25th December 1909 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they lived on Coalpit Lane Nottingham they had a son William Arthur born 26th March 1910.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 24 Coal pit lane, Nottingham, John William 27 yrs is a smalls ware dealer, he is living with his wife Florence 26 yrs and their son William Arthur 1 year old.

Commencing 5th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private John William Bromley enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he died of wounds at 45th casualty clearing station France he is buried at Achiet-Le-Grand communal cemetery extension, France.
