George Walter Davis was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick a cycle hand and Ann Davis née Cooper of 90 Union Road Nottingham.

His father Frederick was born in 1869 at Nottingham, his mother Ann Cooper was born in 1870 also in Nottingham, they were married on 21st Febuary 1894 at St George's Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Milk Street, Nottingham Fred 42 yrs is a cycle hand, he is living with his wife Ann 41 yrs and their children, Norah 17yrs a lace hand, George Walter 15 yrs a fitter, Alfred 10 yrs, Charlotte 8 yrs, William Henry 5 yrs, Ada 3 yrs and Queenie 10 months old.

Military history

Private George Walter Davis enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 27th October 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 20, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Buried: Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France. Row B, Grave 12.
