Family history

George Nixon was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he lived at 39 Walker Street Nottingham. he was the son of George a builders labourer and Ruth Nixon née Turville of 39 Walker st Sneinton Nottingham.

His father George was born in 1872 at Nottingham his mother Ruth Turville was born in 1874 at Nottingham, they were marrried in 1893 at Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 52 Windmill Lane, Sneinton, George 39 yrs is a builders labourer he is living with his wife Ruth 37 yrs and their son George 14 yrs of age.

Military history

Private George Nixon enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France on 25th February 1915. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
