Bernard William Toplis was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of George Matthew Toplis a house painter and Jane Toplis néé Chamberlain of 19 Handel Street Nottingham.

His father George Matthew was born in 1859 at Nottingham, his mother Jane Chamberlain was born in 1862 at Nottingham, they were married in 1885 at Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Handel Street, Nottingham, George Toplis 52 yrs he is a house painter he is living with his wife Jane 49 yrs they are living with their 8 children including Bernard William 15 yrs a lace warehouseman.

Military history

Private Bernard William Toplis enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was attached to a Trench Mortar Bty. he died of wounds on 30th October 1916 at 9th general hospital at Rouen, he is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen
