William Henry Dykes (junior) was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Henry Dykes (senior) a labourer and his first wife Ellen Barton (1874-1901.) of Duncombe Street, St Ann's Well Road Nottingham.

His father William Henry (senior) was born in 1873 at Nottingham, his mother Ellen Barton was born in 184 she died in 1901 aged 27 yrs

His father married his second wife Harriett Morris who was born in 1875 at Beeston, Notingham,they were married on 20th May 1905 at Emmanuel Church, Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 74 Duncombe Street, Nottingham, William Henry (senior) 38 yrs is a labourer he is living with second wife Harriett 36 yrs and their children,William Henry 17 yrs a cach builder, Harold 3 yrs and Herbert 7 months old.

Military history

Sergeant William Henry Dykes,enlisted at Harrogate, he served with the 11th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he died on 8 October 1916 of wounds received in action and was buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme (grave ref. III.F.32).
