Family history

John Scattergood was born in 1893 at Sherwood, Nottingham, he was the son of the late William and Kate Scattergood nee Burbage of St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1855 at Nottingham, he died in 1897 at Nottingham aged 42 yrs his mother Kate Burbage was born in 1857 at Sherwood, they were married on 25th January 1880 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 8 Swanwick Street, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham, his widowed mother Kate 54 yrs is a card board box maker, she is living with her children, Lilly 27 yrs a card board box maker and John 18 yrs a card board box maker.

John was the husband of Marion May Meakins (born 10th January 1896) they were married on 5th April 1915 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, they lived at 68 Baily Street, Old Basford, Nottingham, they had a daughter Elsie born 17th October 1915.

Commencing 9th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

His widow emarried on 25th May 1917 to William Henry Claring.

Military history

Private John Scattergood enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 41925 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) he later served wit the 11th battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 17th September 1916 and is buried at Pond Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
