Family history

born George Luther Gamwell he was born in 1885 at Rawmash, Rotherham, he was the son of the late John Henry Gamwell a coal miner hewer and the late Ann Elizabeth Gamwell née Dallison of 9 Green Lane Rawmarsh.

His father John Henry was born in 1855 at Finningley, Yorkshire, he died in 1918 aged 63 yrs, his mother Ann Elizabeth Dallison was born in 1860 at Rawmarsh she died in 1899 aged 39 yrs, they were married on 31st December 1883 at St Stephens Church, Rotherham they had 2 further children, John b1888 and Jane Ann born 1894

In the 1911 census the family were living at 9 Green Lane, Rawmarsh Rotherham, John Henry 55 yrs is a coal miner hewer and a widow, he is living with his children, Luther 26 yrs a coal miner, John 23 yrs a coal mioner and Jane Ann 17 yrs .

Luther married Edith White born 21st February 1882 in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 4 Lamartine Street St Ann's Nottingham.

Commencing 26th July 1917 his widow was awarded a pension 12 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military history

Private Luther Gamwell enlisted at Rotherham he inittally served with the service number 14707 in the York and Lancashire Regiment, he was serving with the 6th Bn Connaught Rangers when he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
