John William Grainger was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a cycle fitter Mary Ann Grainger née Glover and the brother of Elizabeth, Sarah and George Grainger of 20 Spencer Street, Coventry.
His father was born in 1874 at Radford, Nottingham, his mother Mary Ann Glover was born in 1872 at Radford, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham, they had 4 children.
In the 1911 cenus the family lived at 28 Kyte Street New Lenton, Nottingham Mary Ann Grainger 38 yrs wife is living with her children, Elizabeth A 15 yrs a cotton winder, John W 13 yrs a scholar, Sarah A 9 yrs and George c 3 yrs of age.
Rifleman John William Grainger enlisted on 12th November 1914 at Nottingham, giving his address as 23 Bramcote Street, Radford, Nottingham, he was 19 yrs and 2 months old, he was a cycle factory hand. He was posted to the 17th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. Landing in France on 28th April 1915. He was killed in action on 8th August 1916, and is buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
