He was the son of George and Eliza Ann Hawley of 1 Kendal Street Park Row and later 18 Kentwood Road Colwick Road (both Nottingham). He was the brother of Edith and Bertha Hawley.
Ernest Hawley was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of George a leather dresser and Eliza Ann Hawley née Glover of 18 Kentwood Road Colwick Road Nottingham.
His father George was born in 1867 at Nottingham, his mother Eliza Ann Glover was born in 1866 in Derbyshire, they were married on 14th April 1884 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Nottingham. they had 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census he and his parents are living at 1 Kendal Street, Park Row, Nottingham, George 45 yrs is a leather dresser he is living with his wife Eliza 45 yrs and their children, Ernest 19 yrs a leather dresser, Edith 16 yrs and Bertha 10 yrs of age.
Private Ernest Hawley enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he is buried at Fricourt New Military Cemetery
His brother Private George Hawley enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 5150 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later he served with the 16th battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd September 1918, he is buried at Favreuil British Cemetery
