Joseph Johnson was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John Johnson a lace machine fitter and Emma Johnson née Stevens of 14 Deligne Street, Nottingham. and the brother of Jack, Jane and William Johnson.
His father John was born in 1852 at Nottingham, he died prior to the 1911 census, his mother Emma Stevens was born in 1858 at Nottingham, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 17 Page Street Nottingham. Emma 52 yrs a widow is living with her children, Joseph 29 yrs a window cleaner, Jack 25 yrs a window cleaner, Jane 18 yrs a slip winder and William 10 yrs of age.
His pension record cardss indicate his mother was Emily Johnson however the census returns show her to be Emma
Private Joseph Johnson enlisted and served wit the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France on 28th February 1915 and he died of self inflicted wounds on 3rd July 1916, aged 35 at Kirby-Le-Soakes, Essex
