Ralph Ambrose was born in 1897 he was the son of the late Frederick a railway signal man and Agnes Ambrose née Mcilveney and the brother of Maurice, Charles, Gertrude and Norah Ambrose of Nottingham.
His father Frederick was born in 1863 at Halesmere, Surrey he died in 1909 aged 46 yrs, his mother Agnes McIlveney was born in 1867 at Derby, they were married on 10th March 1891 at St John's church, Beeston, they went on to have 6 children.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 27 Sketchley Street Blue Bell Hill Road St Ann's Nottingham, Agnes Ambrose 44 yrs is a widow she is living with her children, Robert 18 yrs a railway porter, Maurice 14 yrs a news boy, Raph 13 yrs an errand boy, Chalres 9 yrs a scholar,Gertrude 9 yrs a scholar and Norah 6 yrs of age.
Rifleman Ralph Ambrose enlisted at Nottingham, he served with 'A' Coy 1st battalion, Rifle Brigade, he was killed in action on 6th July 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate memorial, Belgium.
