Family history

Alfred Whittle was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late Arthur William a general labourer and Mary Ann Whittle néé Cooper of 56 Wordsworth Road, Radford.

His father Arthur William was born in 1852 at Nottingham, he died in 1910 aged 58 yrs, his mother Mary Ann Cooper was born in 1856 at Nottingham, they were married in 1875 at Nottingham, they had 8 children.

Alfred married Alice Edwards (born 28th August 1884) in 1903 at Nottingham, they lived at 6 Pembroke Place, Walker Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham they had 2 children, Alice Ethel born 3rd February 1906 and Alfred Leonard born 26th March 1908.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 7 Selbourne Street Pym Street St Ann's Nottingham Alfred 29 yrs is a brewery labourer, he is living with his wife Alice 27 yrs and their children, Alice 8 yrs and Leonard 3 yrs old.

Commencing 17th July 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week.

His widow remarried on 10th February 1917 to William Wells a munitions worker.

Military history

Private Alfred Whittle enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 27th December 1915, he is buried at Menin South Cemetery, Belgium.
