Samuel Croft was born in 1892 at Nottingham, he lived at 49 High Street Old basford Nottingham he was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Croft née Lago of 41 Derby Street, Beeston, Nottingham.
his father Joseph Croft was born in 1853 at Darlaston, Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Lago was born in 1855 at Tamworth, Staffordshire, they were married on 18th March 1875 at Holy Trinity Church, Northwood, Staffordshire, they went on to have 12 children, sadly were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Chard Street, Nottingham, Joseph 58 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with hos wofe Elizabeth 56 yrs and their 3 children, Robert 22 yrs a lace curtain mender, Florence 16 yrs a laundry hand and Grace 14 yrs of age an office girl.
In the same 1911 census Samuel is serving in the Royal Field Artillery he is serving in India, he is 20 years of age.
Gunner Samuel Croft enlisted on 28th February 1910 at Nottingham, aged 18 yes and 11 months, he served with the Royal Field Artillery, he served in India and after returning to England he landed in France on 20th December 1914, where he served with the 1st brigade Royal Field Artillery, he was killed in action on 9th May 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
