George Bird was born in 1879 at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire, he was the son of Thomas Starling Bird a wood worker machinist and Elizabeth Ann Bird, née Redford of Woodley Street, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire.
His father Thomas Starling Bird was born in 1857 his mother was also born in 1857 both were born at Sutton Bridge, Lincolsnhire, they were married on 4th February 1878 at Sutton Bridge they went on to have 3 childen.
In the 1911 census his parents are living at Woodley Street, Ruddington, Thomas Starling is 54 yrs and a wood worker machinist, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 57 yrs and their son Harry 28 yrs a bricklayers labourer.
He was the husband of Sarah Phyllis Wain (born 1st May 1878 ) they were married in 1899 at Nottingham, they lived at 44 Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham, they had 4 children, Harry born 1900, Cissie May born 28th January 1903, George Leslie born 11th October 1904 and William Raymond born 21st April 1908.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Hartford Street, Nottingham, George Bird 32 yrs is a brick layers labourer he is living with his wife Sarah 32 yrs and their children, Harry 11 yrs a scholar, Leslie 6 yrs a scholar and Raymond 3 yrs of age.
Commencing 18th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.
Private George Bird enlisted at Derby he served with the 2nd battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th April 1918, he is buried at New Irish Farm Cemetery, Belgium
Chris Bird, George's great grandson, notes that he 'moved to Nottingham from Lincolnshire around 1899/1900 and started a family where they lived in the Meadows area. My granddad and father were brought up in the Meadows.'
