Charles Attenborough was born in 1872 at Nottingham, he married his wife Eleanor Hutsby born 18th May 1880 on 31st January 1903 at St Marys Church, Nottingham. They went on to have the following children, Hilda born 5th October 1903, Irene born 10th December 1907 and Doris May born 2nd August 1914.they lived at 1 Pierpoint Street, Sneinton, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 74 Manvers Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. They are shown as Charles 38 yrs a bricklayers labourer who is living with his wife Eleanor 31 yrs an overlocking machinist and their children Hilda 7 yrs and Irene 3 yrs. A third daughter, Doris, was born three years later.
Commencing 9th June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.
Sapper Charles Attenborough enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the Railway Operating division Royal Engineers he died of wounds on 2nd December 1918 at the Redcross hospital Ashton. and was buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref. 05493).

“ATTENBOROUGH. – In loving memory of Charlie, beloved husband of Eleanor Attenborough, died of wounds December 2nd, 1918. Fondly remembered. – Wife and children.
“ATTENBOROUGH. – In loving memory of dear father, who died of wounds December 2nd, 1918. One year has passed away, and still to memory dear. I often speak your name, dear one, and shed a silent tear; the flowers we lay upon your grave will wither and decay, but the thoughts of one who sleeps beneath will never pass away. – His loving daughter Hilda.”
