Herbert Lance Clarke was born in 1892 at Nottingham, he was the son of John Clark a box manufacturer and Annie Elizabeth Clarke, née Atkin of 35 Colborn Street, Nottingham.
His father John was born in 1865 his mother Annie Elizabeth Atkin was born in 1869 both were born in Nottingham, they were married on 7th October 1886 at Lukes, Sneinton, they went on to have 9 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 35 Colborn Street, Nottingham, John 43 yrs is a box manufacturer, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 42 yrs and their 9 children including Herbert Lance 18 yrs a clerk.
Herbert was the husband of Ada Elizabeth Scott (born 17th February 1893) they were married on 27th June 1913 at Ontario, Canada. they lived at 100 Hunger Hill Road, St Ann's, Nottingham and had a son Herbert Alfred born 31st December 1917.
Commencing 2nd June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
The family was living at 100 Hunger Hill Road, St Ann's, Nottingham, at the time of Herbert's death in November 1918.
Private Herbert Lance Clarke enlisted at Edmonton, Middlesex he served with the 17th battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. Herbert died of pneumonia in hospital in France on 24th November 1918 and was buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery,Wimille, Pas de Calais.
