Family history

William Parkes was born in 1893 at Nottingham he was the son of George a lace machine builder and Eliza Ann Parkes née Wilson and the brother of George, Albert, Ernest, Herbert and Eliza Ann Parkes.

His father George was born in 1875 at Nottingham, his mother Eliza Ann Wilson was born in 1874 at Nottingham, they were married in 1893 at Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 86 Manvers Street Nottingham. George 36 yrs is a lace machine builder, he is living with his wife Eliza 37 yrs and their children, William 17 yrs a jackard machine builders apprentice, George 11 yrs a scholar, Albert 9 yrs, Ernest 7 yrs, Herbert 5 yrs and Eliza Ann 11 months old.

William was the husband of Gertrude Prestbury born 18th April 1894 they were married in 1914 at Nottingham. they had a son William Parkes who was born on 13th May 1915. They lived at 6 Belton's Yard Manvers Street Sneinton Nottingham.

Commencing 30th June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Getrude married Frank Green in 1919 and they lived at 3 Cardinal Street St Ann's Nottingham.

Military history

Sergeant Wiliam Parkes enlisted on 14th June 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 22 years 3 months he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 19th September 1916 and is buried at Savy British Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row N. Grave 29.
