William Dennis was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Henry Smith a hosiery worker of 2 Paradise Place, Henry Street, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Stanhope Street, Sneinton, Henry Smith 58 yrs is a widow, he is a hosiery worker, he is living with his sons, Samuel Smith Dennis 18 yrs single a coal porter, William Dennis Smith 14 yrs a printer in the paper trade and Ernest Dennis Smith 9 yrs of age.
His pension record card shows he had a brother Samuel Smith a private soldier in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 on the first day of the battle of the Somme.
Able Seaman William Dennis enlisted on 28th August 1915, he was drafted to the Mediterraenan Expedition Force on 16th March 1916, he joined the Anson Battalion, at Stavros on 23rd March 1916, he died of wounds in the 149th Field Ambulance, his wounds consisted of left arm compound fracture and buttock and left foot. He is buried in St Julien. Dressing Station Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium (grave ref. II. K. 25).
His brother Private Samuel Smith enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the service number 5034 later renumbered 266643, in the 1st/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
