Alfred Pratt was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred an engine driver and general labourer, and Ada Pratt née Howitt and the brother of Mabel, Albert, Doris and Emily Pratt.
His father Alfred was born in 1871 at Nottingham, his mother Ada Howitt was born in 1873 at Nottingham, they were married on 14th April 1895 at St Georges Church they went on to have 6 children sadly two were to die in infancy or ealy childhood.
In the 1911 census hte family lived at 11 Davis Street Carlton Road Nottingham Alfred 40 yrs is an engine driver he is living with his wife Ada 38 yrs and their children, Alred 14 yrs a warehouse boy, Mabel 8 yrs a scholar, Albert 6 yrs a scholar and Doris 3 yrs of age.
Private Alfred Pratt enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 1889 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was serving with the 46th battalion Machine Guns Corps when he landed in France on 28th February 1915, he was killed in action on 3rd October 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial.
His father Alfred Pratt had also served in the he was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, he enlisted on 6th March 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 36 yrs and 5 months and his address as 11 Davis Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, he was a rivetter, posted to the Royal Field Artillery, he appeared before a medical board on 19th February 1916 and was found to be unlikely to become an effiecient soldier due tio Epilepsy he was discharged on 26th February 1916.
