Family history

Albert Benson was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of Robert Smith Benson a lace warehouse man and Florence Benson nee Coupland and the brother of Horace, Florrie and Leslie Benson.

His father Robert was born in 1862 at Nottingham, his mother Florence Coupland was born in 1860 at Newark, they were married on 1st August 1881 at ST Matthias Church, Snenton, they had 9 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Eyres Avenue, Windmill Lane Sneinton Nottingham. Robert 49 yrs is a lace warehouse man, he is living with his wife Florrie 51 yrs and their children, Albert 24 yrs an insurance agent, Horace 17 yrs a warehouseman, Florrie 14 yrs an errand girl and Leslie 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Private Albert Benson attested on 8th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his address as 1 Eyre Ave, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, Nottingham, giving his age as 29 yrs and 100 days, he was a despatch clerk, his next of kin was his father Robert of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 10th March 1916 at Derby and was posted to the Durham Light Infantry landing in France on 20th September 1916 he was killed in action on 3rd December 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
