Family history

George Sands was born in 1892 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of the late Benjamin an engineer and his secod wife Anne Matthewson of Finkhill Street, Nottingham. (his first wife was Ann Ogle 1834-1867 they had no children.)

His father Benjamin was born in 1837 at Nottingham, he died in 1897 aged 60 yrs, his mother Anne Matthewson was born in 1848 at Nottingham married on 12th June 1868 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham, they had 6 children.

Geeorge married Harriett May Hazard also born in 1892 at Nottingham, they were married on 24th December 1911 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 2 children, Frank Henry born 30th April 1912, and Florence Mary born 11th December 1914.

Harriett May died on 22nd April 1918 and she was buried on 26th April 1918 at Nottingham.

Georges pension record cards shows that his childrens guardian was Dorothy Reavill of 5 Coalpit Lane Nottingham she went on to receive a pension of 19 shilings and 2 pence a week commencing 31st March 19191

Military history

Private George Sands enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 13929 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment before transferring to the 12th battalion Somerset Light Infantry, he landed in Egypt on 24th October 1915 and was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 in France having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Peronnie Communal Cemetery extension France.

His name is also commemorated on the Mapperley Collieries Memorial at Mapperley, West Hallam, Derbyshire.
