Edward Sleath was born on 1st October 1882 at Hinckley, Leicester, he was baptised on 7th January 1883 at Sharnford, Leicestershire he was the only child of George a brick layers labourer and Elizabeth Sleath née Wood of 7 Hill's Yard Millstone Lane Nottingham.

His father George was born in 1857 at Leicester, his mother Eliza Wood was born in 1859 at Sharnford, Leicestershire, they were married in 1882 at Leicester.

In the 1911 cenus his father George is living at 4 Pump Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 53 yrs of age and is married and is a brick layers labourer, he is living with Eliza Thacker 52 yrs single a charwoman, and a boarder George stated he had been married 29 yrs and had had one child.

Edward Sleath's pension record shows his dependant was Catherine Young (unmarried wife) of 2 Alfred Street South, Nottingham she was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week. from 13th June 1918.

Military history

Private Edward Sleath enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.
