Family history

William Albert Edgar Smith was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Albert Smith and had been adopted by John Nicholson a timber yard labourer and his wife Maria Nicholson née Rawlings , his adopted father John Nicholson died in 1906 aged 36 yrs, his adopted mother went on to remarry in 1909 at Nottingham to Joseph William Shaw born 1884 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Hague Street, Radford, Joseph William Shaw 27 yrs is a coal miner he is living with his wife Maria Shaw 34 yrs (they have been married 2 years) they are living with their children, Alice Maud Nicholson 20 yrs a mill hand, William Albert Edgar Nicholson 14 yrs a mill hand, Joseph William Arthur Shaw 1 year old.

He was the husband of Nellie Elizabeth May Miller (born 1st January 1897) they were married on 18th December 1915 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, they lived at 17 Manvers Street Nottingham..

Commencing 3rd February 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Private William Albert Edgar Smith enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 1st/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 12th July 1918, he is buried at : Fouquieres Churchyard Extension, France. Plot 3. Row G. Grave 13.
