Family history

George Richards was born in 1889 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he was the son of Elias George a beer house keeper and his first wife Pricilla Richards née Bradley.

His father Elias was born in 1859 at Birmingham, his mother Pricilla Bradley was born in 1859 at Nottingham she died in 1904 aged 45 yrs, they were married on 25th March 1877 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they had 5 children.

His father remarried in 1905 at Nottingham to Mary Ann Wise born 1866 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at the Lincoln Arms 41 Canal Street Nottingham, Elias George 52 yrs a beerhouse keeper is living with his second wife Mary Ann 45 yrs and his sons George Richards 22 yrs a barman assisting in the family business. and Arthur 19 yrs a packing case maker.

Military history

Private George Richards enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Forestes Regiment, he was killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
