Family history

George Holmes was born in 1891 at NottinghamHe was the 24 year-old son of John Henry Holmes a meat salesman and Annie Holmes née Room of Nottingham and a brother to Annie Mary, Florence and Edith

His father John Henry was born in 1865 at Thurgarton, his mother Annie Room was born in 1876 at Nottingham they were married in 1888 at Spalding, Lincolnshire, they went on to have 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 75 Alfred Street, Nottingham, John Henry 45 yrs is a meat salesman he is living with his wife Annie 35 yrs and their children, Annie 23 yrs a card edger, Florence 22 yrs a light packer and Edith 18 yrs a pattern girl.

Military history

Sergeant George Holmes, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he landed in France on 8th September 1914 and was gassed May 20th and died 26th May 1915, aged 24. at No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station, Bailleul, France. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension.

Death notice published 26th May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

“HOLMES. – Killed in action, May 26th, 1915, Sergeant G. Holmes, 2nd Sherwood Foresters. – From his loving sisters, Annie, Florence, and Edith.”

In memoriam published 28th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-

“HOLMES. – In loving memory of Sergt. G. Holmes, Sherwoods, fell in action May 26th, 1915. – Annie, Florence, Edith.”
