Walter Harby was born on 30th June 1899, he was baptised on 17th July 1900 at St Bartholomews Church, Nottingham he was the son of Thomas a farm labourer and Emily Harby née Wall and the brother of Elizabeth, Thomas and Doris Harby.

His father Thomas was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Emily Wall was born in 1859 at Cradley Heath,Staffordshire, they were married C1886 they had 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 63 Randolph Street Carlton Road Nottingham, Thomas 54 yrs is a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Emily 52 yrs and their children, Florence 20 yrs a lace finisher, Elizabeth 18 yrs a lace finisher, Thomas 13 yrs an office worker for hosiery manufacturer, Walter 11 yrs a scholar, and Doris 6 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Walter Harby enlisted at Brighton, he served with the 2/6th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment he died of disease on 26th May 1917 in India he is buried at Ferozepore Military Cemetery, India
