Thomas Stokes was born in 1893 at Dudley, Staffordshire he was the son of Samuel Stokes a barge/boatman and Eliza Stokes née Mason of of Oldbury, Birmingham

His father Samuel was born in 1857 at Oldbury his mother Eliza Mason was born in 1856 at Oldbury they were married on 24th July 1876 at St Thomas Church, Dudley, they went on to have 17 children, sadly 10 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 1 Court House, Brades Road, Ronds Green, Samuel 54 yrs is a barge/boatman, he is living with his wife Eliza 55 yrs and their children, Samuel 30 yrsa labourer, John 27 yrs a coal miner loader and Mary 14 yrs of age.

Thomas was the husband of Monica Trimnell Rippon (born 19th August 1892) whom he married in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 13 Johnson Road, Nottingham.

Commencing 18th November 1918 his widow was awardd a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military history

Driver Thomas Stokes enlisted at Chesterfield, he served with 'D' Bty 285th Bde, Royal Filed Artillery, he was killed in action on 28th April 1918 he is buried at Morbecque British Cemetery, France

'Stokes. Killed in action April 28th Driver T Stokes, RFA, the dearly loved husband of Monica Stokes, 13 Johnson Road Lenton. - Loving wife.'
