Ernest Cyril Whatnall was born in 1899 at Leicester, he was the son of Albert a builders storeman and Lily Whatnall née Horner and the brother of Albert, Elsie May, Wilfred Harold and Edith Whatnall.

His father Albert was born in 1871 at Leicester, his mother Lily Horner was born 1871 also at Leicester, they were married in 1891 at Leicester, they went on to have 6 children.

In the 1911 census the family livied at 57 Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham Albert 40 yrs is a builders storeman, he is living with his wife Lily 40 yrs and their children, Albert 18 yrs a pork butcher, Elsie May 15 yrs, Lily Doris 13 yrs, Ernest Cyril 11 year of age, a scholar, Wilfred Harold 10 yrs and Edith 8 years of age.

Military history

Private Ernest Cyril Whatnall enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2/4th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 17th April 1918 he is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
