Family history

Harry Rowlett Crayton was born in 1880 at Nottingham, he was the son of Richard a brewers carter and Elizabeth Crayton née Green of 40 Sharp Street, Hull

His father Richard was born in 1856 at Woostone, Lancashire, his mother Elizabeth Green was born in 1848 at Beggleswade, Lancashire, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham and had 4 children,

In the 1901 census the family lived at 66 Broad Oak Street St Ann's Nottingham.

Harry Rowlett married Ethel Beatrice Woolley (born 12th November 1880) they were married on 14th October 1900 at St Georges Churhc, Netherfield they lived at 52 Plantagenet Street, Nottingham, they had 3 children, Dorothy May born 1902, Bearice Rose born 24th February 1904 and Winifred Rowlett born 7th November 19105.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Claremont Villas, Rockwood Road, Nottingham, Harry Rowlett 31 yrs is a cycle frame maker he is living with his wife Ethel Beatrice 32 yrs and their children Dorothy May 9 years, Beatrice Rose 8 yrs and Winifred Rowlett 6 yrs old.

Commencing 21st August 1918 a pension of 29 shillings and 3 pence a week.

Military history

Lance Corporal Harry Rowell Crayton enlisted at Nottingham, giving his age as 33 years and 11 months, he was a motor mechanic and was living at 13 Campbell Grove, Robin Hood Street, Nottingham he stated he had previous miliary experiance wit the Sout Notts Hussars, he was embodied for war on 5th September 1914 and posted to the 3rd Cavalry Reserve. He entered theatre on 26th April 1915.

He was discharged from the Army on 13th April 1917 no longer fit for active service due to pulmonary tuberculosis. He died on 24th April 1918 of a cardiac failure.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 26/4/1917:

'Crayton. On 24th inst. Harry Rowlett, late SNH, the dearly loved husband of Ethel Beatrice Crayton, aged 37. Rest after weariness. - Sorrowing wife and daughters.'

His brother Private Tom Harold Crayton enlisted at Hull on 27th January 1915 giving his age as 29 yrs and 9 months, he was a grocers clerk and was living at Queens Road, Hull, he served with D' Coy 10th battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, he landed in France on 7th March 1916 he was returned to England on 17th September 1916.

He died on 11th March 1918 of phthisis (pulmonary tuberculosis) he is buried at Hull Northern Cemetery
