Family history

Arthur Roe was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late William Roe a Chelsea Pensioner and Caroline Roe née Duke and the brother of Lizzie and Annie Roe.

His father William Roe was born in 1841 at Lenton, Nottingham, he died in 1911 aged 70 years, his mother Caroline Duke had been married twice before she was born in 1849 in London, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they had 5 children two sadly died in infancy or ealy childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 3 Rigley's Terrace St Ann's Well Road Nottingham Caroline Roe 62 yrs is a widow and lace dresser, she is living with her children, Lizzzie 21 yrs a lace jennier, Annie 19 yrs a lace dresser and Arthur 15 yrs a joiner.

Military history

Rifleman Arthur Roe enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 16th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he died of wounds on 23rd April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 23/4/1918:

'Roe. In loving memory of my dear son Rifleman A Roe KRR who was reported missing April 23rd 1917, now reported killed on that day. Far from home but ever in our thoughts. - Sorrowing mother and sisters.'
