Family history

John Harold Terry was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of Richard Alfred Terry a general labourer and Mary Ann Terry née Irons, of 77 Ragland Street, Nottingham.

His father Richard Alfred Terry was born in 1856 at Lenton, his mother Mary Ann Irons was born in 1862 at Tydd, Lincolnshire, they were married on 4th January 1880 at St Matthews Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents were living at 77 Ragland Street, Nottingham, Richard Alfred Terry 55 yrs is a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Annie 48 yrs and their son Edmund Terry 16 yrs a baker.

John Harold married Susan Newton (born 29th July 1883) they were married in 1902 at Nottingham, and was the father of Elsie Annie born 1903, , Richard Henry born 1905, John Harold born 1908, Leonard born 1910, Dorothy born 1912 Harold born1914 and Hilda born 1917.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Dame Agnes Street St Ann's, Nottiingham, John Harold 29 yrs is a road maker, he is living with his wife Susan 30 yrs and their children, Elsie Annie 8 yrs, Richard Henry 6 yrs, John Harold 3 yrs and Leonard 1 year of age.they later lived at 46 Sycamore Road ST Anns, Nottingham.

Commencing 14th October 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Lance Corporal John Harold Terry enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 29th March 1918, having no know grave his name is commemorated on the Pozierers Memorial.

He was awarded the Military Medal.

'Terry. Killed in action March 24th 1918, Lance-Corpl J H Terry MM, Sherwood Foresters of 46 Sycamore Road. - Sadly missed by his wife and six children.'
