Albert Callaway was born in 1893 at Basford, he was the son of Joseph a foreman van man and Maria Callaway née Porter and the brother of Mabel, William and Gladys Callaway. In 1911 they lived at 45 Gawthorne Street Basford Nottingham.
His father Joseph was born in 1862 at Nottingham, his mother Maria Porter was born in 1861 at Wilsthorpe, Derbyshire, they were married on 8th November 1886 at St Marys Church, Nottingham, they had 5 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Cawthorne Street, New Basford, Joseph 48 yrs is a foreman van man, he is living with his wife Maria 50 yrs and their children, Mable 23 yrs a machinist, Ernest 21 yrs a warehouse man, Albert 18 yrs a wadding manufacturer and Gladys 9 yrs a scholar.
He was the husband of Margaret Louisa (née Papps) Callaway (born 10th December 1893 ) whom he married on 26th December 1914 in St Stephens parish Church, Nottingham and the father of Margaret Callaway born 4th May 1915 in Nottingham.
The family lived at 13 Midlothian Terrace Gregory Boulevard Nottingham.
Following his death his wife lived at 5 Dalkieth Terrace, Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham.
Commencing 14th October 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Albert Callaway, enlisted at Nottingham on 25th May 1915 and served with the 1/5th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 8th December 1916 arriving in France the same day. He was admitted to number 2 general hospital and transferred to England on 3rd May 1917 (reason not stated ). He returned to France on 10th September 1917 and was killed in action on 22nd March 1918. He is buried in the Cambrin Military Cemetery.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 11/4/1918:
'Callaway. Killed in action March 22nd, Private A Callaway stretcher bearer Sherwood Foresters. - Sadly missed. Sorrowing wife and child.'
Further death notices published 13th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“CALLAWAY. – Killed in action, March 22nd, 1918, Pte. Albert Callaway, stretcher bearer, Sherwood Foresters, aged 25, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Callaway, 165, Gladstone-street, Nottingham. – Deeply mourned by father, mother, Gladys, and Will (in Italy).
“CALLAWAY. – Killed in action, March 22nd, 1918, Pte. Albert Callaway, Sherwood Foresters. He did his duty bravely. – Mabel & Fred, Clara & Ernest (Mesopotamia).”
In memoriam published 22nd March 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-
“CALLAWAY. – In loving memory of Pte. A. Callaway, 2/7th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action March 22nd, 1918. Ever remembered. – From loving wife [Margaret] and daughter, mother-in-law.
“CALLAWAY. – In loving memory of our dear son, Pte. Albert Calloway, Sherwood Foresters, killed in action March 22nd, 1918. A cheery word, a smile for all, he died a hero loved by all. Ever in our thoughts. – From ever-loving mother, dad, sisters, and brothers.”
