Ernest Whatton was born in 1897 at Wilford, Nottingham, he was the grandson of George and Harmina Whatton.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 28 Kirkwhite Street Meadows Nottingham, George 58 yrs is a foundry carter he is living with his wife Harmina Whatton (nee Reavill) 58 yrs and their son Frederick Whaton 31 yrs single an iron driller, and their grandchildren, Ernest Whatton 14 yrs an office boy and Phyllis Taylor 3 yrs of age.
His penstion record card shows his dependant to be Albert Whatton (uncle) of 28 Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham.
Private Ernest Whatton enlisted at Nottingham on 21st October 1914 at Nottingham giving his address as 28 Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham he was 19 yrs and 9 months old, he was a labourer, posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment he embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 disembarking at Rouen, He was suffering from influenza when he was returned to England on 14th January 1916. after recovering he returned to France embarking from Folkstone on 13th August 1916 and disembarking at Boulogne the same day. He was posted to the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment on 27th August 1916 he was killed in action on 1st July 1917, he is buried at Beaumetz-Les- Loges communal cemetry, France
