Family history

George William Mansfield was born in 1888 at Nottingham, he was the son of John a sail maker and Elizabeth Ann Mansfield née Howarth and the brother of Agnes, Sarah, Joseph, Mary and Fanny Mansfield.

His father John was born in 1856 at Sawley, Derbyshire, his mother Elizabeth Ann Howarth was born in 1859 at Boston, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In 1891 they lived at 45 Bertram Street Trent Bridge Footway and later at 65 Colwick Road (both Nottingham).

In 1911 George was a private serving with 15th Hussars at Potchefstroom Tranavaal South Africa.

In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 43 Kentwood Road, Sneinton, John Mansfield 55 yrs is a sail maker, he is living with his wfie Elizabeth Ann 53 yrs a housewife, ahd their children, Mary Ann 25 yrs a shirt button holer, Fanny 21 yrs a lace hand, Cluade Robinson 17 yrs no occupation listed .

Military history

Second Lieutenant George William Mansfield enlisted and was serving in the 15th Hussars in South Africa during the 1911 census, he was commissioned as Seconfd Lieutenant in the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he landed in France on 28th November 1917 and died on 22nd March 1918 he is buried at Morchies Military Cemetery, Morchies, France.
