Alfred Norwebb was born on 29th June 1897 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 25th July 1897 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham, he was the son of William James a paper warehouseman and Elizabeth Norwebb née Cotton and the brother of Beatrice May Norwebb of 20 Hutton Street, Colwick Road, Nottingham.

His father William James was born in 1871 at Nottingham, his mother Elizabeth Cotton
was born in 1870 at Nottingham, they were married on 16th April 1892 at St Pauls Church Nottingham, they had 8 children sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In 1901 they lived at 13 Cherry Street, Coalpit Lane Nottingham.

Military history

Private Alfred Norwebb enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 4th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Nottingham Evening Post 4/4/1917 In Memoriam (abridged):

'Norwebb. In loving memory of our dear son Pte. Alfred Norwebb, killed in action April 4th 1917. - From his sorrowing mother, father, sisters and brothers.'

'Norwebb. In loving memory of our dear nephew Alfred, killed in action April 4th 1917. - Fondly remembered by his Aunt Charity and Uncle Jack.'

There are ten Norwebbs on the 1911 Census in Nottinghamshire but Alfred's family is not amongst them. His Aunt Charity, who posted the second obituary, was born at Nottingham in 1880 and married John Bowles in 1910.
