Daniel Spriggs was born on 25th May 1875 at Great Weldon, Northamptonshire, he was the son of John Spriggs a farm labourer and Mary Ann Spriggs née Brown.
His father John was born in 1838 at Great Weldon, Northamptonshire, his mother Mary Ann Brown was born in 1841 at Brigstock, Northamptonshire, they were married on 7th April 1859 at Brigstock, Northampton, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his parents were living at Great Weldon, Northampton, John is 71 yrs a farm labourer he is living with his wife Mary Ann 70 yrs of age.
Daniel Spriggs was the husband of Ellen Hardy (born 12th April 1872) they were married on 30th August 1898 at Nottingham registrar office, they had children, Horace Edwin born 3rd April 1899 at Nottingham and Hilda Spriggs born 9th May 1904 at Nottingham, In 1901 they lived at 2 Island Street London Road Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Alfred Street, Nottingham, Ellen Spriggs 38 years married is a cleaner she is living with her children, Horace 12 yrs a scholar and Hilda 6 yrs a scholar, they are living with Elizabeth Hardy 68 yrs a widow and lace finisher.
In the same 1911 census we find Daniel Spriggs 35 yrs an insurance agent living at 55 Gordon Street, Kettering he is living with his brother James Herbert Spriggs 42 yrs a railway carriage examiner and his family
His pension record card shows he had seperated from his wife by the time of his death, his widow was shown as a guardian for their daughter Hilda and a pension of 6 shillings and 8 pence was awarded in respect of Hilda Spriggs at this date his widow was living at 29 Kirkwhite Street, Nottingham.
Private Daniel Spriggs enlisted at Whitehall, Middlesx, he enlisted on 5th October 1915 at Kettering he was 40 yrs and 4 months he was an agent, he repoted to Whitehall in London on 8th October 1915 where he was found fit for home or service abroad. . He initially served with the service number 18777 in the Army Service Corps, He transferred (304757) to 725th Coy Labour Corps he landed in France on 23rd October 1915, and died of wounds on 18th February 1918 he is buried at Ruyaulcourt Military Cemetery, France.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 23/2/1918:
'Spriggs. Killed in action February 19th, Pte. Daniel Spriggs, ASC, husband of Ellen Spriggs. - From sorrowing wife and children.'
